Nuff said !

Ok, Leela was a feisty warrior companion to Tom Baker’s fourth Doctor and as you can see from the image her scanty costume must have helped with the ratings. She was also if memory serves me correctly the first Dr Who companion to perhaps never scream or at least not scream as much as the others.

Either way there will soon be alot of middle aged men ( myself included ) who will be smiling a bit more today !

” Burma Chronicles is the most enlightening and insightful book about life under the country’s brutal dictatorship in years.

Rory MacLean, Guardian newspaper.

The Burma chronicles is a graphic novel written and drawn by cartoonist Guy Delisle chronicling the year he, his wife and their baby spent in Burma when he wife was employed by Medecins Sans Frontieres ( Doctors without borders.)

The Burma that Delisle describes is ( and still is now ) a military dictatorship and Delisle uses the Burma chronicles to show us the hardships and absurdities of living in a such a country. Rather than present his visit in a strict chronological order Delisle gives us an entertaining series of viginettes based on his observations, some are very funny such as when he was conned by a fat monk and some are harrowing like when he shows that any Burmese person associated with him could be thrown in jail without warning.

To illustrate his adventures Delisle uses a simplistic art style that means none of the flow of his observations are interupted by too much eye candy but at the same time it brings to life the parts of Burma he is focusing on.

Despite the ” choppy ” nature of the stories I never felt jarred or unable to read more of this fascinating account of living in a country I am never likely to visit. In fact while reading this book I became so engrossed that I finished it in one night and was disapointed to come to the end. Luckily Delisle has written plenty more for me to enjoy and if you wish to know more about this talented author and his work his official website can be found here .

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Boosting to be the Grand Masters of the fourth pillar(Story). Bioware plans to do what they do best and incorporate it in a MMO. With each class receiving a unique story, races and companions there should be something for everyone as well as providing different experiences for the rerollers and altholics. Backed by tons of lore and possible some reconning I really am eager to see what becomes of this blockbuster AAA title and see how cohesive the personal, world stories and general MMO environment becomes.

Imperial Agent

Being as I started gaming with first person shooters like Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark being a secret agent always appealed to me and this is why initially I had an interest in the Imperial Agent. As time grew on I become more and more attuned with the class. Being a Bioware game the story will play an important role in SWTOR and from interviews the one fact that really caught my eye was that the Imperial Agent will be the class to see the whole picture of what’s going on through the Old Republic timeline. You know when I read a story I want to be able to see the whole picture by the time I’m finished and the I.A seems to be doing just that. Story aside I’m picturing myself on how I want to play this class. The one problem though is, as of now I haven’t really felt comfortable playing a ranged class in a MMO and I will need some hands-on time to see if I like it or not perhaps I’ll go with the versatile Operative A.C and adopt a medium – short range playstyle oppose to the long range burst capabilities of the Sniper A.C. Something to ponder I suppose. .

Sith Inquisitor

Power, knowledge, ruthlessness and a snazzy dress code that will scare and intimidate whoever walks your way pretty sums up the Sith Inquisitor. If the Sith Warrior is hate and brutality, the Inquisitor is cunning and treacherous. I have to admit the video trailer of this class really influenced me. I didn’t really have a definite choice outside of the I.A. until I saw it. Lots of force lightning with a hint of snobbishness of professing that they know what true power is while killing Sith and Jedi alike in many ways mostly involving lightning in some way. At one point through dipomacy and stealth, she was able to eliminate a Jedi with ease and the icing on the cake was the absorb skill shown at the last bit of the video. I always wanted to play the cunning bad role and this seems to fit the bill.

Hopefully at Pax Prime I will be able to get my hands on whatever demo they are showing at Pax Prime this year. Look forward to it.

Jedi Shadow

The Jedi Shadow is an A.C of the Jedi Consular. According to the lore skirts a bit more towards the boundaries of the light/dark side with some having a strong belief that extreme measures should be taken to combat the Sith. The Jedi Shadow like an assassin work towards eliminating anything dark related from amulets of power, tombs, to dark jedis. Though Jedi Shadow seems different from the main class Consular in terms of story which should be more diplomatic than anything. I wonder if they will shape the story to accomadate allows those who want to pick up and follow some of the lore of the Shadow without being dumped in playing a dark sided roll.

It is the truth. Steam sales run in and for the first time in my life, I totally get that flawed logic behind statements like, “it’s ok to buy it cause I am actually saving thirty bucks!” Well forty dollars later I have picked up a slew of indie titles that I am excited to jump into.

The first I should mention is Trine. This game was released for the PC platform back in July of 2009. It isn’t something new, but I had overlooked it several times when purchasing games. Steam had it on sale yesterday for $1.99 and I decided that deal was too good to pass up. It was amazing! Trine is essentially a side-scrolling adventure that utilizes three characters and their unique skills to overcome obstacles and enemies along the way. I was able to finish the game in roughly six hours which was a little disappointing, but it was well worth the money that I paid for it. There is still a lot of completionist content left in the form of achievements and loot chests to find, so I could probably squeeze another 4 hours out of this title. Keep in mind that I played this game nearly straight for 6 hours, and have a lot of experience with titles like Trine. You will probably get a bit more time out of the game than I did.

Next honorable mention is Frozen Synapse. I had heard about this game for a few months now and just couldn’t bring myself to stomach the $25 dollar price tag. Well it was on sale and a friend convinced me to pick it up and I am glad I did. It comes with a second copy to give to a friend and if you pay the extra $2-3, the great ambient/techno soundtrack. The game is a turn based tactical dream land. Think of it like a game of chess, only if you make a wrong move here, your pawn now gets a shotgun to the face. With an plethora of commands to customize each units movement, 5 seconds of action can have you obsessing over details for 20 minutes. This is a great game for the think-tank tactician.

Here are some other games I have picked up and enjoyed:

Aquaria

Eufloria

Winter Voices

Braid

Atom Zombie Smasher

Machinarium

Capsized

Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 combat is about being visually impressive, dynamic and visceral. Similar to Tera its about positioning and tactics that will win you the day. You see a centaur preparing to fire an arrow at you. You can freely dodge out of the way before the arrow reaches you. Work with allies to perform combos such as a fire wall created by Elementalist and a Engineer deploying a turret on one side of the wall and projectiles will do additional fire damage. Due the aesthetics of Guild Wars 2 everything has a visual impact. Glue Shot from a Engineer will leave a sticky brownish-white puddle, an Elementalist using one of their elite skills literally turns them into a tornado or Ranger visually letting loose a valley of arrows. With the unique mechanic of positioning and tactics the professions I want to play address this is a very interesting way.

Thief

The capstone of what a thief should be; a very agile and effective when getting the drop on someone at the expense of less protection and lower health. The Thief in Guild Wars 2 embraces this. They have the ability stealth which allows them to steal useful items from various enemies and use them against them as well the ability to shadow step which allows them to get in and out of combat with relative ease. Possessing the unique energy system called Initiative, which is similar to the energy bar most people are accustomed to with rogues except here in GW2 and their style of combat it more about a risk and reward then learning how to weave your attacks to maintain a constant source of energy. With the more powerful skills costing more initiative you have the make wise choices when playing the Thief. After getting some hands on time at Pax East 2011 with the Thief I look forward to playing it again.

Engineer

The most recently announced profession, the Engineer practically bring the tool shed with them wherever they go. Being a Engineer they have access to all type of tools from heavy weapons, turrets, grenades, bombs and mines via kits. A Flamethrower kit equips the engineer with a flamethrower with the ability to use it in multiple ways. One being the obvious short range AoE fire attack but it also can be used in more interesting ways such as the Backdraft ability that sucks enemies into short range where the weapon is the most effective and a nifty defensive skill Air blast that deflects incoming ranged attacks. Using these kits an Engineer has a lot of options in any situation. Just imagine going into a already progressing fight find a safe area close to your allies and lay down a healing turret to support them then bring out your med kit and lay down some healing items. Whip out your mine kit to safe guard the area and then go on the offensive with your grenade kit to produce some AoE damage and debuffs. Its situations like these where I get really excited because I really like classes that utilize outside tools to address various situations with having experience in playing Global Agenda with the Robotic class and utilizing varies turrets and machines. I really enjoy that style of play and I look forward to Pax Prime to get some hands on time with the class.

Keep on tuning, there will be more.
